Horror movies are spirit-cleansers that allow us to stare at our deepest fears and primal instincts. But what happens when that cleansing takes the form of an electronic exorcism? What happens when it is the dead of night and your soul is arrested within celluloid confines? Are you perhaps as twisted as the films you watch?
If you’re as rabid about horror as we are, you’ve likely waded through the annual deluge of listicles purporting to settle the genre’s greatest scares once and for all. So at the risk of adding to the noise and with some brazen awareness of our own pretensions, here is our shot at the same. We believe a good horror film should turn an atheist into a theist for that one night, or at the very least, bring you to your knees. These may not be the most iconic, the most technically accomplished or even the most universally beloved films the genre has to offer, but after much deliberation, we’re putting our money on these 20 as the scariest films of the 21st century.
